Your first Japanese noodles: a short guide to udon and soba at Narita Airport
Visitors often tell us they are not sure what to order. Among Japanese food, noodles have their own conventions: hot or cold, and what to do with the little dishes that arrive alongside.
We keep menus in several languages. Here is a short guide as well.
First decide: hot or cold
Hot noodles come in the dashi itself, which doubles as the soup. You can drink it straight from the bowl, and yes, it is fine to slurp.
Cold noodles (zaru) arrive with the broth in a separate cup. Dip a few strands at a time rather than the whole portion, and the last mouthful will taste as good as the first.
Add condiments gradually
Spring onion, grated radish and grated yam are best added a little at a time, so the flavour shifts as you eat rather than all at once.
Easy choices for a first visit
- Kitsune 950 yen – sweet simmered fried tofu, gentle in flavour
- Tempura 1,880 yen – freshly fried tempura with dashi
- Plain zaru 900 yen – the simplest way to try cold noodles
- Small tendon with udon set 1,580 yen – a little of both noodles and rice
